Historien, archéologue et chroniqueur du Goulag et de la Grande Terreur

Depuis la fin des années 1980, Iouri Dmitriev a documenté et détaillé l’histoire du Goulag dans sa région natale, la Carélie, au Nord-Ouest de la Russie.

A cet égard, le travail qu’il a mené sur la construction du Canal de la mer Blanche, menée entre 1931 et 1933 par des prisonniers de Goulag et des paysans exilés («colons spéciaux»), est inestimable et de la plus grande précision scientifique. Dmitriev n’a pas seulement fait des recherches sur l’histoire du travail forcé, mais il a également compilé plusieurs « livres du souvenir », enregistrant les noms de milliers de personnes mortes dans les camps ou fusillées et enterrées par le régime soviétique en Carélie.

En tant que chef d’expéditions archéologiques à la recherche des champs de la mort de la Grande Terreur de Staline, Dmitriev a découvert plusieurs lieux de fusillade de masse et d’inhumation. En juillet 1997, avec Veniamine Joffe (Iofe) et Irina Flige de l’association Mémorial de Saint-Pétersbourg, il a redécouvert le plus grand d’entre eux, Sandarmokh près de Medvezhegorsk, où plus de 7 000 victimes de la Grande Terreur de Staline ont été abattues et enterrées dans des tombes anonymes entre 1937 et 1938.

Peu de temps après, avec l’aide de Ivan et Sergei Chugunkov, Dmitriev a découvert Krasny Bor, situé pas loin de Petrozavodsk. Grâce a un travail méticuleux dans les archives, Dmitriev a pu mettre en lumière les noms de presque tous les 1.297 hommes et femmes abattus et enterrés à Krasny Bor. Au cours des années suivantes, les deux lieux sont devenus le centre des journées annuelles du souvenir, le 30 octobre à Krasny Bor et le 5 août à Sandarmokh.

Arrestation, procès et acquittement, 2016-2018

Dmitriev a reçu une reconnaissance nationale et internationale pour son travail remarquable au cours du dernier quart de siècle. Cependant, le 13 décembre 2016, il a été arrêté et inculpé pour avoir produit et détenu du matériel de pornographie enfantine. Le 5 avril 2018, après avoir passé des mois de détention avant et pendant son long procès, Dmitriev a été acquitté et entièrement lavé d’une telle accusation. D’après les témoignages d’experts et d’autres témoins convoqués par la défense, il est devenu évident que Dmitriev n’était pas engagé dans la production de matériel pornographique; il était lui-même sain d’esprit et n’avait aucune inclination de pédophile.

Néanmoins, en juin 2018 La Cour Suprême de Carélie a annulé le verdict et engagé un deuxième procès contre lui. Dmitriev a été de nouveau arrêté et reste aujourd’hui en détention, alors qu’a commencé son deuxième procès. S’il est reconnu coupable, Dmitriev risque une peine maximale de 15 ans dans une colonie pénitentiaire.

Une Guerre de Mémoire

Le Goulag et le dictateur soviétique Joseph Staline sont aujourd’hui au centre d’une guerre de mémoire en Russie dans laquelle l’histoire revient à troubler le présent. Même l’identité des personnes abattues et enterrées à Sandarmokh a été contestée. L’arrestation et la poursuite de Iouri Dmitriev en décembre 2016 ont attiré l’attention du public en Russie et depuis il y a eu une campagne nationale pour sa libération.

Appel et pétition

Par cette lettre, nous nous rallions aux centaines d’intellectuels, d’activistes et de citoyens russes qui ont exprimé leur appui à Dmitriev et à d’autres personnes touchées par des arrestations et d’autres actes d’intimidation pour leur rôle dans la documentation de l’histoire de l’URSS.

Nous demandons la libération immédiate de Dmitriev. Il faut lui permettre de reprendre ses recherches sur l’histoire du Goulag et son travail pour nommer et commémorer les victimes de ce système.

Nous demandons que la liberté académique soit garantie à Dmitriev et à tous les chercheurs et toutes les ONG actives dans ce domaine.
